In Matthew 5:6 (NRSV) Jesus says “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” This is one of the beatitudes Jesus was teaching His disciples. When I read this verse the one word that comes to mind is desire. Jesus uses two words in this verse to get His disciples attention, hunger and thirst. Why, because His disciples could see the number of hungry and thirsty people all around them. Also there was no irrigation system pumping clean water through the arid land. Therefore, the people desired to have food and water, and would travel many miles to get it. Their purpose for doing this is because they wanted to live and not die.
Jesus was saying to His disciples what do you desire, to live or die? If you want to live then you should have a desire to be in a right relationship with God. Which means we are seeking to be better today than we were on yesterday. This verse is letting us know it is not a one and done. How do I know this to be true? After you eat a meal and are satisfied do you ever get hungry again, or after you drink a tall glass of water do you ever get thirsty again? We know the answer.
This is why we continue to come to church and read our bibles, because we have a desire to be better disciples each and every day. I challenge everyone that reads this blog to get hungry and thirsty for Jesus by having a desire to be better. I don’t care how many times you have read the bible – stay hungry. When you do, your worship experience will also change. Remember, it starts with your desire!
