What’s interesting is how people view those in positions of authority. Some people are in awe of them, and will do whatever they tell them. While there are others that will continue to challenge those in this position. I truly believe those in positions of authority are to lead by example. Whatever they ask of people they should be willing to do it, or they have already done it. This is how you gain the respect of those around you. However, no matter how much you do, there will always be a segment that will not agree with you. This is what Jesus has to deal with in His ministry. Those that embraced Jesus, saw Him as someone who was willing to meet people where they were. But, there was a segment that saw His works, and were constantly challenging Him. Why, because they saw Him as a threat to their authority. So, no matter what He said or did, they were going to find something wrong.
In Matthew 8:5-13, a centurion came to Jesus on behalf of his slave. The slave of this man was at the point of death, and if nothing was done he would probably die soon. We have a gentile coming to Jesus believing He was able to heal his slave. The actions of this Roman officer were out of the ordinary, because he was coming to Jesus to heal a slave. The Romans did not have high regard for slaves, they viewed them as tools. Once they are not functioning they are thrown away. But, this is not how the Roman officer saw his slave. He saw him as a person in need of help. At some point the centurion heard about the authority of Jesus, being able to heal the sick. He also heard that Jesus had the authority to speak the words and people were healed. So, when he met Jesus and asked Him to heal his slave, there was something else that happened. Jesus was willing to come to the house of the Roman officer, and heal his slave.
However, the centurion felt unworthy to have Jesus come to his house. Then he said something that excited Jesus, he said, “only speak the word, and my servant will be healed.” This man was letting Jesus know I have faith in you, because I believe you have the authority to heal my slave, by speaking of healing. This is an example of how you are able to excite Jesus, by believing He has the authority to heal by speaking the words. Your life has been changed through the actions and words of Jesus. After the centurion said this, Jesus responded, “go; let it be done for you according to your faith. Do you want to excite Jesus? Then make it your business to live your life believing Jesus can make it happen. Knowing it is through the words He has spoken over you that have changed your life. Why, because you have faith in knowing, Jesus has the authority. He will create change through His Word and actions. Continue to walk in your blessings!
