In 2 Corinthians 4:7 we read “But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.” Paul does not want the people of God to get it twisted. No matter what our calling is, and how well we do it, the power belongs to God. Paul is sharing a fundamental truth with the church in Corinth and with us as well. We know that clay jars are fragile and can be easily broken, and Paul is saying we are fragile as well. However, God made a decision to place His treasure in something that can be easily broken. When we receive an item in the mail that is fragile, it always says on the outside “handle with care”. The writing on the outside does not mean everyone will abide by the instructions. That’s why when we open the package, the fragile item is covered in bubble wrap to ensure it does not break. We have to realize the only reason why we are still here after all we have been through, is because we are covered in the blood of Jesus. This covering keeps us from breaking from under all the pressure we have been through.
Since we have made it through without breaking, we don’t want to make the mistake of believing we are self sufficient. If this happens, we talk more about ourselves and less about the power of God. Then some people may believe the power comes from us. This may sound far fetched but how many people do we know that talk more about their church leaders than they do about God? It’s not always the leader’s fault, but leaders have the responsibility of reinforcing this message “the power belongs to God”.
Think about this, God has placed a treasure inside of you to do great things through His power. There will always be an obstacle attempting to break you, but it will not prevail because you are covered in the blood of Jesus. So, I want you to step out and move in the gifts you have been given to bless all you come in contact with. When they want to praise you, let them know the power belongs to God!
