The one thing we have all dealt with is darkness. Some people have a fear of darkness and will always have a light on when they go to bed. Some people don’t like driving at night, because the headlights are not enough light for them to see. Some people will not enter a room until the lights have been turned on. Darkness is the absence of light, which means you are unable to visualize where things have been placed. Some of us have bumped into things at night because we did not turn on any lights. Being in the dark can cause our thoughts to run wild because we are not able to fully distinguish what we see. The darkness allows some things to be hidden and the only way to expose them is with light.
In John 8:12 Jesus tells us, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Jesus understood the condition people were in and was giving them the opportunity to make a change. When Jesus shared this statement with the Pharisees, they did not embrace it. Why, because they were comfortable in the direction they were going, even though it was not as the Lord instructed. However, they were fooling themselves and were misguiding the people of God. Jesus knew their actions were hurting the people, and not helping them to grow in the Lord. The objective for every believer is to grow and reach their potential in the Lord. This is only made possible when you place your trust in Jesus Christ because He is the light of the world.
The next statement Jesus makes is one of assurance. When we follow the Lord, darkness is no longer an option because we gain a light that will never go out. In essence, the Lord is telling us, that His light will illuminate our lives and will make everything visible. Therefore, we will not have to wonder if we are going in the right direction when we are following Jesus. He will not lead us on a path of destruction, but one that leads to eternal life. Saints, darkness is no longer an option when we follow Jesus. In walking in the Light there will be opportunities to do things we thought were not possible. The only reason we thought this way is because we were in darkness. The one thing darkness will do is limit your options. Why, because you have fallen so many times, and now you are afraid to move forward. Now that you are in the light you can see your way clearly, and you don’t have to be afraid to move forward.
