There is something that causes parents to become frustrated with their children. When a parent gives their child specific instructions to perform a task, they expect it to be done. When the parent comes back to the child and asks them if the task was completed, the child looks at them as though they don’t know what they are talking about. The frustration kicks in, because the parent made sure the instructions were clear and precise. However, the child made the decision not to do as they were instructed. This makes me think about how God has given us instructions to follow, in order for us to be victorious as we journey through life. Can you imagine how frustrated God can be with us, because He has supplied us with what we need to make it?
In James 1:22-25, the writer is making a distinction between hearers and doers. In verse 22, the writer tells us if we choose only to be hearers of the Word we are deceiving ourselves. In the next two verses that follow, James gives another analogy for those that are hearers. He states that they look at themselves in the mirror, and going away they immediately forget what they were like. At no point does a hearer take time to ingest anything they have heard from the Lord. This will occur if you have already made a decision on what you are going to do, and it does not matter what the Lord has to say about it. This is exactly what Cain did, he had already decided to take the life of his brother. Prior to him killing his brother Abel, God spoke to him. To give him an opportunity to change his direction, but he did not embrace the counsel of God. I wonder how many people come to Church to worship the Lord, but are not willing to do as He instructs. If this is you, then you are a hearer. In verse 25, James outlines the benefits in being a doer of the Word. In being a doer of the Word, this would cause you to look at what you are doing, and make the needed changes to be in line with the Word. There will be times the Word will reveal something about yourself that will require you to make some major changes. However, you will only be successful in making the changes when you persevere in spite of what others may think. However, you do it because you know blessings will be coming your way. Are you open to what the Lord is instructing you to do? I want you to receive the blessings the Lord has in store for you. However, they can only be attained through you being a doer of His Word. Continue to walk in your blessings!
