In John 1:1-5, there is a tremendous amount of
information for us to process, so I won’t take any time to
do an introduction to the Scripture. John initially makes
this statement, “In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John wants
to make it perfectly clear the Word was in existence before
there was a world. He is looking back at Genesis chapter
1, when the earth was a formless void, and God said, “Let
there be light.” These were the words spoken by God,
before the earth was formed. As these words were spoken
by God, there had to be action taken in order for this to
come to pass. Jesus is the Word, and immediately
darkness had to dissipate and allow light to shine.
Also, John wants us to understand the Word is connected
with God, because the Word comes from the breath of
God. Which makes the Word God. The key to fully
understand this verse is to realize there is no separation
between God and His Word. Therefore, John is saying to
know God is to know His Word, you can’t have One
without the Other. John is laying the foundation for this
Gospel. This is why he states in verse 2, “He was in the
beginning with God.” Emphasizing the connection of Jesus
to God from the beginning of time as we can understand
it. John continues by letting us know all things exist,
because of Jesus. God spoke the Word, and Jesus is the
Word and performed the actions. This brought everything
into being, because Jesus took the words and transformed
them into living things. Everything that exists is because
Jesus followed the instructions of God to bring life.
John goes further by saying life is the light of all people.
Then John makes this statement in verse 5, “The light
shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not
overcome it.” This final statement helps sum up the
purpose of Jesus making a physical appearance in the
world. He came into existence to bring life, because
through Him is the Light for all people. During His public
ministry, His Light was shining in the darkness, and the
darkness was not able to stop it from shining. Jesus
healed the sick, gave sight to the blind, allowed the lame
to walk, and raised people from the dead. Also, He
forgave people of their sins. These are all things that
cause people to think they have been overcome by
darkness. But, after Jesus shined His Light on these
situations darkness was removed.
However, there were leaders that were attempting to
block the Light, but they could not overcome it. I want you
to know as a child of God, you have a Light that is within
that will overcome darkness. This is a Light the world did
not give, so the world can’t put it out. Therefore, I want you
to let your Light shine, because the Light lets people know
where to go in order to receive life. Continue to walk in
