We are in the season of advent, and it is evident that our Heavenly Father chose to give His Son to save us. There is something we need to understand about our God, He does not know how to stop giving. In essence what I’m saying is, God wants to make sure we have everything we need from day to day. Think about this, there are still a number of people that will not praise or recognize God. He still supplies the entire world with what it needs for all to live. Since we have given our lives to Jesus Christ, we have come to understand the love God has for everyone.
I wonder how many of us are limiting our blessings, because we are settling for less. We need to stop settling and extend ourselves to embrace all the Lord has for us. By doing so, we will understand how the Lord does not want to limit His people, but bless them beyond what they can imagine.
In 2 Kings 4:1-7, we have a story about a widow, who was married to one of the prophets that served Elisha. She came in tears to Elisha asking for his help, because creditors were going to take her two children as slaves to pay a debt. She needed his help to resolve the issue. Elisha asked her, “what do you have in the house?” She stated nothing, but a jar of oil. What she thought was nothing was going to be used to bless her household. Elisha instructed her to borrow empty vessels from all her neighbors, and not just a few. This is the key to whether or not she was going to limit her blessing. She could have gotten a few jars from her neighbors, but that would have limited her blessing. This woman was in the position to determine the size of her blessing. How you ask, by the number of vessels she was going to borrow. She was also told, once they have gathered the vessels to go into her house and shut the door. The purpose for doing this was to remove any distractions from the outside. God wanted her undivided attention, and now one needed to see Him at work except for her family. When she began to pour the oil from the jar into the first vessel. The oil kept coming out until the vessel was full, and I know she was amazed. Then she went to the next vessel and the same thing happened. Can you imagine the look on her face, in seeing a jar filling vessel after vessel with oil and not running out. She was so caught up in what God was doing, she asked for another vessel. Her son said we don’t have any more. Then she looks throughout her house and sees all the vessels filled with oil, from one jar of oil. She then went back to Elisha, and told him what happened. He tells her to, “go sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your children can live on the rest.”
Think about this, her blessing could have been minimized, if she had only gathered a few vessels. In essence she determined the extent of her blessing. She had to be willing to put forth the effort, and God would take it from there. This is still true, your blessings are based on the amount of effort you are willing to put forth. God wants to give, but He needs you to supply Him with the vessels. Continue to walk in your blessings!
