Whenever I’m traveling to a place I don’t know, I will use my GPS to get there. The GPS
will take me to the location I entered, will show how many miles you will travel, and give
your anticipated arrival time. Over the years I have been using my GPS more frequently,
because it has proven to be reliable. Prior to the GPS, you would have to use a road
map, or ask someone how to get there. You needed a current road map to start with,
and you had to know how to follow the roads. If you were asking someone for
directions, you wanted to know if they were familiar with the area. However, there was a
chance you could still get lost, because you missed something on the map. Or, you
missed writing down a step in the directions you were given. In either scenario you
could still get lost if you missed a turn. Even with the GPS you can get confused, but
you will be alerted if you deviate from the correct course.
In Psalm 25:4-5, the writer wants the Lord to be his guide. The writer has a desire to live
in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord. In verse 4, there are two things the writer
needs, “know your ways”, and “teach me your paths.” The writer is making it clear, he
wants the Lord to guide his life. Why, because he understands the Lord’s ways will lead
him to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him. Also, by doing this he is being taught the
path he is to take. In verse 5, the writer wants the truth of the Lord to lead him.
Therefore, he wants to be taught the truth as well, because he wants to understand the
truth. He wants the truth to be evident in his life, and this is the reason for why he says,
“teach me.” The primary reason for asking is salvation. The Lord saved his life, and he
wants the Lord to get the glory from his life. This is the reason he is asking for the Lord’s
guidance. He ends this verse by saying, “for You I wait all day long.” In essence the
writer is not going to do anything to cause himself to get out of step with the Lord. He
will only move through the guidance of the Lord. Patience is the key.
How do you feel about your relationship with the Lord? Do you have a desire to live in a
manner that is pleasing to the Lord? If so, then you should stay in constant
communication with the Lord through prayer. When you are willing to learn, then
growing spiritually will be evident. Also, knowing His ways, and going as He directs will
allow you to make an impact on the lives of others. You will be the evidence to others to
what the Lord can do in a life, that received the salvation of the Lord. Continue to walk
in your blessings.
