The book of Leviticus contains the law and ordinances God gave to Moses for the Israelites. The priest came from the Levites and the first high priest was Aaron, Moses’ brother. Aaron’s sons were to assist him in his duties and were identified as priest to the Lord. They were instructed on how to present themselves in the presence of God and how to offer the sacrifices on the altar. There were a number of cleansing rituals they had to perform before they were able to come into the presence of God. They also had specific attire they had to wear in order to perform their duties. All of these things had to take place for them to worship the Lord. Once the sacrifice was prepared it was offered to God by fire on the altar. Everyday there were offerings made to God by fire on the altar.
In Leviticus 6:12-13, Moses is sharing the importance of the fire on the altar. The fire on the altar is where the offerings were made to God. In verse 12, Moses states this fire is to be kept burning, and it shall not go out. Then it is stated in verse 13, “a perpetual fire shall be kept burning on the altar, it shall not go out.” In order for the fire to be maintained, those in charge had to make sure wood was available. Therefore, the people had to continuously gather wood for the altar, because this was a fire that could not go out. So there were always efforts being made to ensure the wood supply would not get low. This was a task that involved many people, because it was too much for one person to handle. The purpose of the fire was to burn the offerings made to God, and God would honor what was presented through the fire. By keeping the fire burning the people recognized the importance of being persistent in their worship to God. There could be no worship without the fire burning on the altar to present the offerings.
As New Testament believers there is no need for us to present our offerings to the Lord with fire on the altar. Jesus was the final offering made to redeem the entire world, but that does not mean we don’t need fire. The fire we have today is through us being anointed with the Holy Spirit. This fire within us should be a perpetual fire that does not go out. How do you keep this fire burning, by continuing to do the will of the Lord. Also, you add fuel to this fire by constantly staying in the Word of God. It’s His Word that continues to give us the fuel to move forward in ministry. However, there will always be those around you that will attempt to put out your fire. They will do this by trying to discourage you, by saying what you are doing will not make a difference. Where others will constantly bring up your past, and say you are unfit to provide ministry. It does not matter what they say, because you know who started the fire in you, and He will keep it burning. Why, because you made the decision to fuel your fire. By studying the Word of God, and praying to know what direction to take. So, keep doing it, and don’t stop. Continue to walk in your blessings!
