This is the third sermon we are doing from the Gospel of John, chapter 1. As I stated before, this chapter lays the foundation of John’s Gospel, and makes it clear that Jesus Christ dwelt here on earth. In this third sermon, John let it be known that Jesus is the Word that became flesh.
In the beginning of this chapter John was alluding to Jesus, but was referring to Him as the Word. He has been setting the stage for his readers to know the Word is Jesus, and He is the Son of God. Also, to help us to understand Jesus is the physical manifestation of the Word, and He has been with God from the beginning. In John 1:14-18, John is dealing with a few things, for the sole purpose of letting it be known, Jesus is in a class by Himself.
John lets us know, “the Word became flesh, and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” Which means Jesus Christ was a living breathing person, and this had to happen to show us how much we are loved by God. Also, to make us aware, He is God’s only Son. This verse tells us about the character of Jesus, He is full of grace and truth. He came to make us aware of the grace that has been shown to us, and the grace that we will receive through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. The only way this was going to happen was by telling us the truth about ourselves. This is why the leaders of that time had issues with Jesus, because He told them the truth about themselves. Then showed them how they needed to interact with the people by being an example.
However, the leaders were more concerned about the people doing what they said, rather than being an example. Then the writer shared how John the Baptist recognized the purpose of Jesus and how it ranks higher than his own. Then John shares, “The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” Now he makes the distinction between Moses and Jesus Christ. God worked through Moses to free the Hebrews from slavery, and then gave him the law to share with the people. The law was given to instruct the people on how to live. Jesus Christ came to be a living example of how your life can be lived to glorify God. This is what sets Jesus Christ apart from everyone that came before Him. He was the only One who could speak with authority, because He is the Word that came in the flesh. And, He is God in the flesh.
As a Christian, you are responsible for living your life in a manner that will glorify the Lord. I know it can be hard to do, but you are not relying on yourself, but on the Word of God. When you step out in faith and move according to the Word, you are not alone. The Lord will order your steps and will lead you, and this is how your life will glorify the Lord. Why, because you are trusting Jesus Christ, who is in a class all by Himself. Continue to walk in your blessings!
