When we look at all that is going on around us, and the news reports about how some states are hitting record highs on the number of Covid-19 cases. It can be unnerving, causing more people to stay home, while others are thinking we will not be able to recover. Then I think about the Israelites, after the tenth plague Pharaoh decided to free the Israelites. They left quickly, because they were no longer slaves in Egypt. However, this is not the end of the story, in Exodus 14, Pharaoh decided to pursue the Israelites, and had planned to kill them. They had made their way to the Red Sea, and when they looked back they saw the Egyptian army coming to kill them. Immediately, they wanted to give up, because they felt inferior to the Egyptians. They had already forgotten what the Lord had done for them. They see themselves with no escape route; therefore, they think they are going to die at the banks of the Red Sea. It’s amazing how quickly we can forget the power of the Lord. He is the One that freed them, and brought them to a place they would not be able to run away. They would have to put their trust in the power of the Lord.
Moses was instructed by God “to tell the people to go forward”. This would appear to be odd instructions, because if they went forward, they would drown in the Red Sea. Also, God instructed Moses “lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the Red Sea and divide it”. What may appear to be a dead end, in God’s hands becomes a new path. What God did was transition the Israelites from a slaves’ mentality, to free them mind and body. God was changing their mindset, to let them know the Egyptians will no longer be a problem. Walking on the dry ground of the Red Sea was a cleansing process, to allow the people to understand the power of God. Once they had crossed over the Egyptians tried to follow, but God released the water and they were destroyed. The message they had to learn was nothing is impossible with God, and if He brings you to it, He will get you through it! When the Israelites looked back at the Red Sea they saw their problems were washed away. Therefore, no matter what comes up against you: don’t give up – continue to trust in God!
