Paulette Smith Cook was born in Montross, VA called by many “the Northern Neck”.    She is oldest child of Howard Smith and Myrtle Henderson Smith and has one brother: Howard.  She attended Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and later earned a Masters in Human Resources from Central Michigan University.

Paulette has been a member at Broad Rock since 1991 and has worked with Youth Dept. as the director, children’s corner, vacation bible school and now teaches Sunday school on first Sunday.  She has discovered that you can learn from children too.  She also served on the trustee board for a number of years.  Outside of Church she has been an active member of the Henrico County parents Special Education Advisory Board.

In 2007 God touched her heart and she fell in love with and married Pastor Kevin Cook.  From this experience, she learned a lesson to pass on to her kids about God’s plans and “never say never”.  God can truly change “our plans”.  They have one son; Marcus and two daughters; Naomi and Mariah.  Because of her love for youth, Paulette has many adopted children and three of them are now grown:  Lafonya, Derek and Kiera.

Her parents taught her the value of education at an early age and independence.  They also shared the most important gift: faith and love of God.    Her favorite scripture now is Luke 12:48  And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required.  She continually looks to Proverbs 31 for inspiration.

Her female role models: her mother and her Aunt Vashti.  They have always taught her independence, love of cooking and being thrifty.  She loves trying new recipes and is appreciative of her family who tries and evaluates her recipes.  They also have gotten used to her goal of having a coupon for every occasion.

As a parent, she has learned the value and necessity of prayer.  The one piece of furniture she is still seeking for her home is a prayer bench.  She has a spot set aside for it.  Broad Rock is a great church home to raise a family, she has always thought they are the village many seek.
